Recitation 9: Digital Fabrication

For step1, I partnered with Amelia and I am in charge of designing all the left ones. During designing this, I found that nothing happens after I clicked “Boolean Difference”. Then I asked learning Assistant for help and I found that the two rectangles did not connect together after I zoomed in. From this, I learnt that when I use cuttle.xyz to design for laser cutting, I need to input the accurate position of the objects instead of dragging them to the expected position. For the pattern design, I designed pattern like below but then Andy told me that this pattern has lines crossing with each other, which made the laser cutting machine hard to cut. Then he changed it into the one that does not include crossing of lines but remaining the original shapes.

Then after laser cutting the patterns and stands, I compose all the parts together with my partner. The laser cutting process is like below.

But it is hard to fit the servo inside the rectangle hole so we cut the hole a little bigger. We also found that it is hard to fix one of the patterns on center of a servo so we decided to stick it to an arm of servo which can be moved with the moving of servo. It finally works like below. I think in my future projects which need laser cutting, I may reserve a little more space for the holes cut from the entire pieces.
