The Crystal palace

As one of the buildings which have the most iconic structure in Britain, the crystal Palace has its own way to survive for around 12p years before it got burned down in a fire.  Mainly used iron and glass, it has its own special design to hold the structure.

ridge and furrow roof design

This roofing design system is unique, designed with a circular arch to dispersive pressure and hold the glass.

The frame structure of this roof is also very instructive.

this structure is very smart cause it uses the fact that triangles are the most stable structure, which inspires me to use it in the structure of my spaghetti bridge. Consider that using liquid glue will make it hard to build the triangular structure, like the picture shown below, but it’s still a good idea to do so.

But we can still apply the intersecting network structure to our own design, which will increase the toughness of our bridge.

Smart design and emotional design

The design method that the Smart design shown in the video is actually widely used in the world. Starting at the customers’ needs and feedback, which can give a clear direction on how and what to improve the products, can significantly improve efficiency. This is the first thing we can learn.

Emotional design is an important part of industrial design, cause the emotional connection can be one of the main reasons why customers choose this product. One point that I can really relate to is that using marks somehow brings the products and users closer. Also, the more thing you can customize, and interact with, the more emotional connection you have with the products.

Origami in life

Many ideas in real life actually come from or are inspired by origami.

There are some features that an origami structure has. For example foldability. it is widely used in many areas and can be seen in many fields, like in our running shoes, the soles of some shoes borrowed from the origami structure, form a cushion between feet and the ground.

Origami is also widely used in the fashion field. For example,  the famous Japanese brand Issey Miyake uses origami in its bang design a lot.

What is industrial design?

To me, industrial design is creating a bond between the user and the product, it can turn even just a flash of our imaginations into concrete, physical objects that have practical use in real life. By using industrial design methods, we can also fix many daily inconveniences. It is, of course, a kind of art, but its uniqueness lies in its practical uses. They are fully engaged in life itself.  Distance is not needed to show its beauty. it is something you can touch, feel, and use. it has the full integrity to endure the trivialities in life so that it is deeply rooted in our daily lives. I think it is the most down-to-earth kind of art.

Non-problem idea designs–Application lab

Idea 1

Every time when we try to change the water from the vase. we have to pull the whole bunch of flower out and flip the vase all over, which is not only
troublesome but also causes unnecessary damage to the flowers. With this
“Removable vase”, you can easily take off the bottom part of the vase, change the water, and then put it back. With the water level mark and the PH indicator, the bottom part of the vase is able to tell what is the best PH and amount of water for flowers, cause different kind of flowers needs a different amount of water.

Idea 2

If you are currently using iPhone, then you must have experienced
“Charging not Available” before. So this “Mobile phone water absorber” is
designed to get the water out of the phone quickly.
This is more like a suction device, with a perfectly match-sized inlet just
as big as the iPhone charging port when the air the machine blows moves
fast, it brings out the water vapor.

Idea 3

This spray is designed for users to spray on plastic or metal to turn the smooth surface writable, so that people can use marker to write down label or notes.
material: probobaly quick-dry glue that can turn into a membrane.

Idea 4:

People who have the same hand-holding habit often have problems when holding hands with each other.
With this helping tool “hand in hand”, now we can comfortably hold each other’s hand in the position we want.

Models

Materials I used: scissors, paper board, tape.

Model:

Egg dropping experiment

Goal: Make a device only using paper and tape that allows you to drop an uncooked egg from a height of 3 meters.

Progress:

Week 1: initial idea: The first idea that comes to my mind is to put the egg in a pyramid-shaped paper box. Then I have a crazy idea about changing the egg into a “sea urchin”.

Sketch:

The original idea is to put the egg into two cones, but then I realize the paper pyramid is too weak to even stand up. So I decided to full it up with paper balls

These are the three models I tried to hold the egg and paper balls.

Week 2

First failure video

week 3:

After the failure of protecting the egg last week, I improved my project. The lesson I  learned from last time is that the paper balls need to be evenly distributed in the triangular cone.

The quadrangular pyramid I made is as below
