Visiting Shanghai bookstores big and small, touring publishing houses, volunteering for two days at a vibrant book fair and, yes, a fourteen hour flight (each way). The China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair and accompanying VIP program was a whirlwind for our four NYU SPS M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students selected to participate in this amazing global opportunity. This was the first year that the NYU Center for Publishing sent students to the children’s book fair in Shanghai, giving them the unique opportunity to observe the publishing industry on a global scale. (Graduate students in the Center for Publishing also volunteer at the Frankfurt, London, and Sharjah book fairs.) Understanding the children’s market in China, networking with 11 leading international publishers, and helping out at conferences and events at the fair, the four students in China had the experience of a lifetime.

A Book for Everyone: Students at the Sharjah International Book Fair
A sea of sheikhs in white robes and a moonlit dinner served from gold tureens on a rooftop terrace: that marked our last night in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, where four NYU M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students, Jessica Lei, Allie Levick, Kevin Murphy and I were fortunate enough to have attended the 33rd annual Sharjah International Book Fair. When we embarked on our six-day journey, we had no idea we would have the chance to attend a dinner presided over by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah. Nor did we know we would pose for a photo with bestselling novelist Dan Brown, who attended the fair and gave a keynote address broadcast all over the Arab world.

Book Expo America: Rock Concert for Book Lovers
After the first three days of classes, NYU’s Summer Publishing Institute (SPI) students experienced a change of pace from the classroom when they attended Book Expo America (BEA) at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The conference center was transformed into a huge mall where every “store” featured the same thing: books. Even better for the students, the big books for fall were not only prominently displayed, but in some cases given away as advance reading copies.
