“Consumer behavior is changing,” was the message given to students by editors of InStyle as the magazine gets ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary in September. “The world thinks print is slowly dying, but that’s not our day-to-day reality,” said Ariel Foxman, Managing Editor of InStyle, part of Time Inc., one of the largest branded media companies in the world. While InStyle editors make sure to meet the demands of the digital world, the print edition is performing well. In fact, the brand recently published its largest September and March issues ever. Speed Networking: Fast Facts!
Ever wondered how to build a personal brand? (Hint: remove your home address from your résumé and add your LinkedIn URL instead.) How about best practices for social media? (Engage and interact with your audience instead of just pushing content!) These were just some of the topics and comments tossed around at the first-ever “Speed Networking” event hosted by the newly-constituted NYU Publishing Alumni Committee last week at NYU’s Torch Club. Committee co-chairs Laura De Silva and Jaime de Pablos and their devoted event committee members have been working on this for months—and their efforts showed. The committee invited seasoned and senior publishing alumni to serve as “speed facilitators” at each of five tables. Each facilitator was assigned a specific theme to discuss. Committee members were also assigned to each table to help with the discussion. [Read more…] about Speed Networking: Fast Facts!
“You’re Hired!” One Student’s Story
“I was SO nervous,” remembers Danielle Maupai of the moment she stood up at an NYU Center for Publishing Board of Advisors meeting and summarized key elements of her graduate thesis, or “Capstone.” After delivering a flawless Capstone presentation the week before in front of her fellow graduate students in the NYU M.S. in Publishing program, Maupai had been selected to tell the Board members about her thesis. Maupai knew this was a wonderful opportunity to outline her business plan for a new magazine for American teachers in front of executives like Nina Link, President and CEO of MPA: The Association of Magazine Media; John Q. Griffin, former Executive Vice President of Time Inc. & President of Time Inc. News Group and current President of Griffin & Associates; and Louis Cona, Chief Marketing Officer for Condé Nast. Secrets of the Freelance Life
Being stood up by Britney Spears in Las Vegas, going on free vacations, and filing stories from sweatshops in Mexico all come with the territory, a panel of freelance journalists told students at NYU’s Summer Publishing Institute (SPI).
As Donna Sapolin, Magazine Director of SPI, deftly moderated, four top freelance writers and editors generously shared secrets and advice about how to get published happily and steadily in some of America’s leading publications. How to get started? Virginia Sole-Smith, who has filed stories from sweatshops in Mexico and whose bylines appear in the Progressive, the New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, and Elle, among other publications, suggested setting up a schedule to help keep on track. When she was starting out, she made a list of potential stories and publications which might run them, and then resolved to pitch three stories a week. Within three months, Sole-Smith was a published journalist. “Set your own goals and deadlines and be strict with yourself,” she emphasized. [Read more…] about Secrets of the Freelance Life

Faculty Spotlight: Who’s New for Summer and Fall?
At the Center for Publishing, we continue to add new courses and grow our faculty of industry experts, so we thought we’d blog about some new faces at the front of the classroom this semester and next fall. For those of you new to our blog, we created NYUPubPosts earlier this summer. While our initial focus was on our Summer Publishing Institute (scroll down to read all about our great speakers and field trips), SPI has ended. Now, we are shifting our focus to our Master of Science in Publishing program. Throughout the year, we’ll be posting about our many events, new courses, faculty and much more—and inviting students and faculty to contribute as well.
