Harper-Collins CEO Brian Murray: Bullish on Books
In his keynote address opening the book session of the NYU Summer Publishing Institute, Brian Murray, President and Chief Executive Officer of HarperCollins Publishers, assuaged our frantic, job-desiring minds. “Depending on what you read and when you read it, you’ll see a whole lot of headlines telling us about publishing is dead,” said Murray. It depends on who is writing these negative stories, he added. Some might have an agenda behind them, or be based on misinterpreted facts. “But for every one of these articles saying publishing is dead, there’s one saying that big publishing companies are doing great,” Murray noted. “I actually think it is an extremely exhilarating time to be in publishing. From where I sit, looking at all these different markets and all the different publishing we do, I don’t think it’s ever been as exciting or as dynamic as right now.”

When we recently gathered together new fall faculty joining the M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media program, the conversation took quite an interesting turn! Sure, we talked about syllabus development, academic policies and the like. But things really got animated when we asked each of the high-powered publishing executives gathered around the conference table to reveal one “fun fact” that might not be apparent from their official bio. “Students like to know more about their professors,” we told them. And out poured some definitely surprising sidelines and hobbies. Heirloom tomatoes grown in backyard straw bales, anyone? How about championship hockey or Disney princesses? Digital Book World 2013: Change and Cooperation
During a Digital Book World 2013 panel discussion so crowded that some attendees sat on the floor, Matt MacInnis, Founder and CEO of the interactive book company Inkling, made a particularly perceptive comment: “It’s a miracle that the book was a thing the whole world agreed on.” That is, up until recently, it is fair to say that “the book” as we know it has retained the same static, linear structure across various nations and fields of study since the invention of the printing press 500 years ago. Pop Culture Publishing: Liars, Werewolves, and Mockingjays
A sea of familiar faces greeted attendees of the thirteenth NYU Media Talk, sponsored by the NYU-SCPS Center for Publishing Digital & Print Media. Sure, students and faculty filled a jam-packed Rosenthal Pavilion at the Kimmel Center, but what instantly got the crowd buzzing were the displays of book cover blow-ups featuring today’s most beloved characters of young adult fiction, including Bella Swan, Sebastian Verlac, and Emily Fields. The latest NYU Media Talk was titled “Pop Culture Publishing: Young Adult Megahits,” and everyone in attendance wanted the answer to one particular question: “What is the secret sauce to producing hits like Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments, or Pretty Little Liars?” Indeed, as young adult books continue to transcend their traditional audience and shape a new generation of readers (including plenty of adults!), the publishing industry is actively trying to understand how and why children’s books succeed in acquiring their blockbuster-level status.
