It only took six weeks for our Summer Publishing Institute (SPI) students to become industry experts, to change career paths, to expand their networks—just six weeks to transform from “SPI Students” to “SPI Alumni.” As we say “see you later” (never goodbye!) to our 2016 Class, we wanted to give them a chance to reflect on everything they learned this summer and pass their newfound wisdom on to the next generation. NYU Media Talk of the Town: Long Live Long Form
NYU’s Kimmel Center was buzzing with excitement. The 2016 Summer Publishing Institute class mingled with M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students, faculty, and publishing industry insiders while watching the sun set over Washington Square Park and anticipating a talk on the new ways print media is being reborn. The latest installment in the NYU Media Talk series, NextGen Editors: What’s New, Different, and Daring, began with an introduction from moderator Michael Calderone, Senior Media Reporter for The Huffington Post. “When I first graduated from NYU, I had one job at a newspaper, where I wrote one column,” Calderone explained, emphasizing how simple things seemed when he was a student himself. “No one can get by doing that now.”

Millennials and Mobile: Inside the Magazine Media 360 Conference
“Millennials can always tell if you’re being disingenuous,” said Evan Spiegel, CEO and Co-Founder of Snapchat.
Millennial (mil·len·ni·al) noun: A person with birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.
These are big words from one of the most successful innovators of the 21st century. It is time to take stock, he said. Magic Explained: Children’s Publishing at Simon & Schuster
“Children’s books change lives,” said Justin Chanda, Vice President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster’s children’s trade imprints, including Atheneum Books for Young Readers, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, and Margaret K. McElderry Books. (He is also the publisher of the company’s new science fiction and fantasy imprint, Saga Press.) As Chanda spoke, about 20 NYU Summer Publishing Institute students listened intently, excited to be on an industry visit and learn more about children’s publishing. Faculty Factoids and Spring Surprises
Students may not necessarily learn this in the classroom, but their new professors in the M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media program this spring participate in some surprising extracurricular activities. By day, they hold down very serious and senior positions in the publishing industry. But after hours, they do everything from brushing up on their black belt skills to playing in a cover band. The delectable aroma of herbs, spices, and Mexican cooking greeted M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students as they arrived at the test kitchens of Every Day with Rachael Ray for an industry visit. Naturally, at a food magazine, the test kitchen is key–and the perfect place to start our tour! Christine Guilfoyle, the magazine’s Group Publisher, who graciously set up the student visit, explained that a goal of Every Day with Rachael Ray is to help readers understand the everyday practices of good cooking. A Visit to Entertainment Weekly
“You’re never done,” said Cyndi Stivers, managing editor of EW.com about career trajectories and the importance of staying current. “Get comfortable with that idea and keep learning. The stuff that comes easily to you may actually be a rare and marketable skill.” Next to her, Jess Cagle, managing editor of Entertainment Weekly (all Time Inc. top editors have this title instead of Editor-in-Chief), nodded in agreement.
