Even though it has been years since ebooks first shook up the publishing industry, the “Future of the Book” is still a hotly debated topic. It was this exciting subject that brought students, professionals, and book lovers together for the most recent NYU Media Talk. The panel discussion focused on where the industry is now, where it is headed, and some of the obstacles it faces along the way. Moderated by Michael Cader, the creator of Publishers Marketplace and Publishers Lunch, the panel featured a diverse group of industry leaders: Peter Balis, vice president and director, business development, global digital books, at John Wiley and Sons; Judith Curr, publisher of Simon & Schuster’s Atria Publishing Group; Peter Gethers, president of Random House Studio and an editor-at-large for Penguin Random House (U.S.); and Tom Turvey, director of strategic partnerships at Google. Sharjah Book Fair: Arabian Nights and Days
To attend the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) in the United Arab Emirates, you don’t have to be an author or publisher; you just have to be passionate about reading. The fair’s tagline, “For the Love of the Written Word,” was posted proudly throughout the exposition center.

Time Out New York: Pitches and Possibilities
Visitors to a weekly magazine near the close of the next issue might encounter high stress, with editors and art directors running around making last-minute changes. Covers fall through. Ads come and go. Tension rises. But a group of NYU SCPS M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media graduate students visiting Time Out New York (TONY) were instead welcomed to a remarkably calm office. The spacious loft was decorated with great Time Out covers. The office even has its own photography studio complete with mannequins for in-house photo shoots of fashion, food, and the occasional star. “We get some pretty cool celebrities [once in a while],” said Assistant Managing Editor Carolyn Stanley, who gave us a tour of the office. She also briefed us on the 18-year old publication that provides a comprehensive guide to the best things to do in the Big Apple: 60 editions worldwide, 47 issues a year for Time Out New York, and 35 editorial staff members. Publishers Weekly: Books Are Just the Beginning
Just as you might expect, the offices of Publishers Weekly (PW) are a bibliophile’s dream: everywhere you look are stacks of books piled on desks and overflowing onto tables and the floor. While the ambiance is of a library or bookstore of years ago, there is nothing traditional about the 141-year-old publication. The PW staff is involved in podcasts and radio shows, e-newsletters, e-blasts, and webcasts, plus services for self-publishers and much more, including plans to digitize their extensive archives. To learn more about this multiplatform business devoted to serving the book publishing industry (and that means libraries, too!), a group of NYU SCPS M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students last week spent a fascinating time at PW. They met key staffers and heard what they do. [Read more…] about Publishers Weekly: Books Are Just the Beginning
Roman Holiday: Magazines and Madcap Reporting
There is perhaps no greater city than Rome to exude the glamour and luxe often associated with the magazine industry. The ancient allure of the city provided the perfect setting for a global conversation on the future of magazine media. The 39th World Magazine Congress organized by FIPP brought together over 700 industry professionals to discuss current trends and successes, and what they mean for the future of magazine publishing.
Four NYU M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students were selected to attend the congress and report on the event for the FIPP website. Anna Arutiunova, Clarisse Khairallah, Ashley Roberts, and I were excited to be part of the a global conversation and also to meet three NYU Center for Publishing Board of Advisors members attending the Congress: Martha Nelson, Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc., Mary Berner, President and Chief Executive Officer of MPA-The Association of Magazine Media, and Declan Moore, President of Publishing and Digital Media for the National Geographic Society. New Fall Faculty: “Fun Facts” and More
When we recently gathered together new fall faculty joining the M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media program, the conversation took quite an interesting turn! Sure, we talked about syllabus development, academic policies and the like. But things really got animated when we asked each of the high-powered publishing executives gathered around the conference table to reveal one “fun fact” that might not be apparent from their official bio. “Students like to know more about their professors,” we told them. And out poured some definitely surprising sidelines and hobbies. Heirloom tomatoes grown in backyard straw bales, anyone? How about championship hockey or Disney princesses? Read on to learn more about the new faces in the classroom this fall and what they’re passionate about—aside from teaching, of course! [Read more…] about New Fall Faculty: “Fun Facts” and More
BEA 2013: Volunteers and Voices of Change
Students wearing neon green T-shirts with the slogan “Keep Calm and Read On” seemed to be everywhere last week at Book Expo America. There they were in the autograph area controlling crowds, at publishers’ booths helping with signings, at conference sessions, and at author breakfasts. Forty-nine Master of Science in Publishing: Digital and Print Media and 2013 Summer Publishing Institute students were roaming the massive BEA space at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center serving as volunteers and picking up industry knowledge—and plenty of great swag as well. Advanced reading copies anyone? ARCs were there for the picking from bestselling authors like David Baldacci, Scott Turow, Lisa Scottoline, Cassandra Clare, and more. All in all, getting the chance to volunteer at the largest book conference in America was a great treat for students and an awesome way to kick off a summer of studies—and reading!
