From interviewing Namibian and Senegalese publishers, to appearing in the pages of Publishing Perspectives’ Show Daily and fielding conference questions onstage, our students found themselves featured at the Frankfurt Book Fair in ways they could only have imagined. The Fair was a great experience for the three M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students who volunteered there this year, the third time the program has offered this opportunity. Through the support of the Oscar Dystel Research and Development Fund, students Kathi Gadow, Brittany Leddy, and Ashley Sepanski traveled to Germany and experienced firsthand how the largest book fair in the world attracts not only publishers, agents, booksellers, librarians, and authors, but also artists, screenwriters, movie producers, journalists, translators, gamers, illustrators, multimedia creators… even politicians. M.S. in Publishing: Digital & Print Media
The Workman Way: Indie and Innovative
At Workman Publishing, the main conference room is called the “homeroom,“ where staffers regularly settle into homey, slat-back chairs around a long wooden table. As an independent publisher, Workman takes pride in its unique family-type atmosphere and a publishing philosophy that differs significantly from that of the Big Five. Students in the NYU School of Professional Studies M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media program received a personalized and close-up look at the Workman way during an industry visit to the company’s Varick Street headquarters. London Book Fair: Students’ Cup of Tea
“We’re on the move!” proclaimed the signs all over the 2014 London Book Fair. While these referred to a new venue in 2014, they certainly related to this year as well. With all the informational seminars and panels and important meetings, the fair was a flurry of constant movement. And in the middle of all the hustle and bustle, learning and deal-making, were four excited NYU-SCPS M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students.
The “News” About BuzzFeed
“Just because we’re not following the guidelines of older, more traditional newspapers doesn’t mean we’re not credible,” said Summer Anne Burton, Managing Editorial Director of BuzzFeed. “We know what our readers want and we know how to deliver content to our audience, whether it’s lists and quizzes or 5,000 word long-form features.” [Read more…] about The “News” About BuzzFeed
Happy Birthday, InStyle: Twenty and Terrific

While InStyle editors make sure to meet the demands of the digital world, the print edition is performing well. In fact, the brand recently published its largest September and March issues ever. Knopf: The Business of Taste
“People are reading!” said Paul Bogaards, Executive Director of Publicity, Promotion, & Media Relations at Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House (U.S.). “We’re very optimistic!” As Knopf approaches its 100th anniversary in 2015, the imprint has good reason to celebrate a storied literary legacy. During one of the regular industry visits sponsored by the NYU-SCPS M.S. in Publishing: Digital & Print Media program, students met with Bogaards as well as with editors, publicists, and a top art director to learn more about the traditions and philosophy of publishing at Knopf.
