“We nurture our books,” said Jynne Martin, Associate Publisher and Director of Publicity at Riverhead Books, as she welcomed students from the NYU MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media. “We are very selective in choosing which books to acquire, and our small staff-to-book ratio allows us to pay extra attention to every book we publish,” she added. Frankfurt Book Fair 2015: Chocolate, Connections, and a Little Controversy
“It’s massive.” “It’s where everything happens.” “It is the largest book fair in the world.” “There’s a shuttle that gets you from hall to hall.” “It is really big.” The four NYU MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students volunteering at the Frankfurt Book Fair heard plenty of such descriptions in the days leading up to our trip. When Namrata Das, Mary Moates, Marinda Valenti and I stepped into the Fair’s main hall last week, we totally concurred: the Frankfurter Buchmesse, as the locals know it, is truly gigantic. Over 275,000 visitors were counted; 9,300 journalists reported from the event, which took place in the Messe, a fairgrounds so large it has its own train and subway stations. Making our way through the airport-like moving walkways that connected the halls, we greeted the largest book fair in the world with awe. Meet the Publishing Press
“The sky is changing colors,” claimed Bill Brink, Media Editor at The New York Times. This intriguing comment was more metaphoric than meteorological, referring to the current shifts in media. It was delivered during a panel discussion entitled “Meet the Publishing Press: How Media Editors and Reporters Cover an Industry in Transition,” the latest in the NYU Media Talk series sponsored by the NYU Center for Publishing. The panel, which was directed at an audience composed of NYU M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students and the NYU Summer Publishing Institute Class of 2015, featured a diverse and highly experienced group of media professionals from multiple platforms. The moderator was Brian Stelter, Senior Media Correspondent for CNN Worldwide and host of Reliable Sources. On the panel, in addition to Bill Brink, were Michael Calderone, Senior Media Reporter at The Huffington Post; Sarah Ellison, Contributing Editor, Media, at Vanity Fair; and Sarah Weinman, News Editor at Publishers Marketplace where she reports for Publishers Lunch. All About Amy Poehler at HarperCollins
“Saying ‘yes’ doesn’t mean I don’t know how to say no, and saying ‘please’ doesn’t mean I am waiting for permission,” Amy Poehler wrote in Yes Please, the celebrity’s bestselling memoir that spent 23 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list.
Atlantic Media: Tradition + Innovation = Success
“There’s still a lot of money in print,” said Jay Lauf, Senior Vice President & Group Publisher of Atlantic Media and Publisher & President of Quartz. Lauf was one of six Atlantic Media executives who gathered to help NYU School of Professional Studies M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students learn more about how a magazine founded in 1857 by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and James Russell Lowell, among other American icons, became the flagship brand of one of the most innovative media companies in the nation. Like most major media companies, Atlantic Media is exploring a vast range of digital revenue opportunities…while still cultivating the rich returns from print advertising. Behind the Bestsellers: Hilderbrand, Gladwell and Stine Take the NYU Stage
Adults clutching worn childhood copies of Goosebumps and Fear Street books mingled with Malcolm Gladwell aficionados and devoted Elin Hilderbrand fans, along with students from the NYU School of Professional Studies M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media program, faculty, and alumni from the program and across the school. This was quite the occasion: for the first time in 17 NYU Media Talk panels, authors took the stage to divulge their views on all sorts of literary topics including the value of criticism, the author/agent relationship, and their first paid writing gigs. Content Marketing: What the Experts Say
So what is content marketing, really? That was one of the big questions last week at a major panel discussion entitled “Content Marketing: Selling Softly, Selling Smartly” hosted by the NYU Publishing Alumni Association and the NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Publishing. Alumni, students, guests, and friends gathered to hear Joe Puglisi, Senior Creative Strategist at BuzzFeed, Kristin Fritz, Senior Director of Content Marketing in the Digital Operations Group at Penguin Random House (U.S.), and Sam Slaughter, Vice President of Content at Contently, discuss the rise of content marketing (sometimes called “native advertising”) and how it can help build a business and a personal brand. The event was moderated by Jane Grenier, Executive Director of Global Marketing at Condé Nast Media Group and a member of the NYU M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media faculty.
A Book for Everyone: Students at the Sharjah International Book Fair
A sea of sheikhs in white robes and a moonlit dinner served from gold tureens on a rooftop terrace: that marked our last night in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, where four NYU M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students, Jessica Lei, Allie Levick, Kevin Murphy and I were fortunate enough to have attended the 33rd annual Sharjah International Book Fair. When we embarked on our six-day journey, we had no idea we would have the chance to attend a dinner presided over by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah. Nor did we know we would pose for a photo with bestselling novelist Dan Brown, who attended the fair and gave a keynote address broadcast all over the Arab world.
