What’s it really like to be an intern? Many students in the MS in Publishing: Digital & Print Media program enroll in the internship course to get valuable industry experience and a credential on their resume. Students pick their internships based on their interests and work two or three days a week, generally in large companies so that they can have a broad perspective on the industry. To get inside the internship experience a little more deeply, we asked two of our students to give us a brief report on their positions this semester. Here is what they said.

Report from Shanghai: Kids’ Books Go Global
Visiting Shanghai bookstores big and small, touring publishing houses, volunteering for two days at a vibrant book fair and, yes, a fourteen hour flight (each way). The China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair and accompanying VIP program was a whirlwind for our four NYU SPS M.S. in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students selected to participate in this amazing global opportunity. This was the first year that the NYU Center for Publishing sent students to the children’s book fair in Shanghai, giving them the unique opportunity to observe the publishing industry on a global scale. (Graduate students in the Center for Publishing also volunteer at the Frankfurt, London, and Sharjah book fairs.) Understanding the children’s market in China, networking with 11 leading international publishers, and helping out at conferences and events at the fair, the four students in China had the experience of a lifetime.

@twitter, the “Moments” are now
“#LOVE WHERE YOU WORK” reads the bright fluorescent sign on the 6th floor lobby of the Twitter headquarters in Manhattan. This perfectly describes the company and its culture; it is evident that those who work at Twitter are deeply passionate about what they do and the important role that this social media company plays in communication on a global scale. Twitter grew out of SMS communication, which is why tweets do not exceed the 140-character limit. It has since evolved into one of the most widely used social media platforms for up-to-date news and information. As avid lovers of Twitter, a group of NYU MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students were excited to visit the company’s offices last week to learn more about its mission, recent innovations and products, and what the future holds for tweeters worldwide. The Girl on the Train: Tracking an Amazing Ride
“We nurture our books,” said Jynne Martin, Associate Publisher and Director of Publicity at Riverhead Books, as she welcomed students from the NYU MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media. “We are very selective in choosing which books to acquire, and our small staff-to-book ratio allows us to pay extra attention to every book we publish,” she added. Frankfurt Book Fair 2015: Chocolate, Connections, and a Little Controversy
“It’s massive.” “It’s where everything happens.” “It is the largest book fair in the world.” “There’s a shuttle that gets you from hall to hall.” “It is really big.” The four NYU MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students volunteering at the Frankfurt Book Fair heard plenty of such descriptions in the days leading up to our trip. When Namrata Das, Mary Moates, Marinda Valenti and I stepped into the Fair’s main hall last week, we totally concurred: the Frankfurter Buchmesse, as the locals know it, is truly gigantic. Over 275,000 visitors were counted; 9,300 journalists reported from the event, which took place in the Messe, a fairgrounds so large it has its own train and subway stations. Making our way through the airport-like moving walkways that connected the halls, we greeted the largest book fair in the world with awe. Magic Explained: Children’s Publishing at Simon & Schuster
“Children’s books change lives,” said Justin Chanda, Vice President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster’s children’s trade imprints, including Atheneum Books for Young Readers, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, and Margaret K. McElderry Books. (He is also the publisher of the company’s new science fiction and fantasy imprint, Saga Press.) As Chanda spoke, about 20 NYU Summer Publishing Institute students listened intently, excited to be on an industry visit and learn more about children’s publishing. They gazed at the framed covers of Simon & Schuster’s many award-winning books, including those awarded the coveted Caldecott and Newbery Awards. “The beauty of what we do here,” Chanda continued, “is to give people their first experience with books.” [Read more…] about Magic Explained: Children’s Publishing at Simon & Schuster
