Women’s Health and Men’s Health: All About YOU
“Obama said one of the greatest things about being President was that he could call almost anyone and they would pick up the phone,” noted Matt Bean, Editor-in-Chief of Men’s Health, during an MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media industry visit to Rodale Inc. “And he could ask scientists, astronomers, and athletes: ‘How do you do what you do?’ I think we [at Men’s Health and Women’s Health] are in a very unique position of being able to do that ourselves because of the brands that we represent.”

These words from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, leader of Sharjah (one of seven emirates in the UAE), resonated with the four NYU MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students sitting in the audience for the opening ceremony. With peace and the sharing of knowledge in mind, fellow students Marina Salamon, Bernadette Deron, Eric Greene, and I spent our six-day trip fully immersing ourselves in the fair’s goals of bridging countries and markets to foster understanding.

Frankfurt Book Fair 2016: A Lighthouse of Ideas
Guten Tag and welcome to the Frankfurt Book Fair! MS in Publishing: Digital & Print Media students Lauren Evans, Lainey Mays, and Marie Waine set out to help at the largest book fair in the world ready for a week of books, books, and more books. This year, our student volunteers were each assigned a role within the fair, allowing them to interact with a variety of professionals and better understand the industry.
Before volunteer duties at the fair started, the students had a chance to experience the culture of Frankfurt and take a short trip to see more history in Heidelberg. Then it was time to get to work. Below are our students’ takeaways and insights from the front-lines of the book fair:

Atria Publishing: Passion and the Power of Books
“The future of publishing is well assured when there are so many passionate and bright people like these in the room,” said Judith Curr, President and Publisher of the Atria Publishing Group, to a gathering of NYU MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media students. We were invited to visit this highly successful division of Simon & Schuster last week and had just finished telling Curr about why we love publishing and our specific areas of interest. Apparently we impressed her. And there’s nothing like a little flattery from a major publishing leader to further inspire students who are already eager to enter the world of books.
