Behind the scenes at NYU’s Center for Publishing, the Board of Advisors works hard to help us in many ways. Whenever we’re developing new courses for our programs, seeking suggestions for new faculty, learning more about industry trends, or planning exciting student visits to publishing companies, we reach out to the Board for help and advice.
We recently expanded our Board, inviting four leading publishing executives to join our esteemed team of advisors in guiding our students and our programs. Here’s a brief look at our four new members:
SALLY LEE is the Senior Vice President and New York Editorial Director for The Meredith Corporation, responsible for managing the editorial leadership of Meredith’s key New York–based magazine brands. Sally oversees the editorial direction of Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal, Fitness, American Baby, Parents, Siempre Mujer, and Ser Padres magazines. In addition to serving as Meredith’s New York Editorial Director, Sally is also the Editor-in-Chief of Ladies’ Home Journal magazine. Sally’s commitment extends beyond the pages of the magazine. She plays an active role in many charities, specifically CARE—a humanitarian organization dedicated to eliminating world poverty through the education of women.
JOHN Q. GRIFFIN is Executive Vice President and President of Publishing at The National Geographic Society. Prior to joining the Society in September 2001, Griffin was Executive Vice President and COO of Hearst Magazines International in New York. From 1990 to 2000, he was president of the magazine division at Rodale Inc. From 1987 to 1990 Griffin was Chairman, President, and Publisher of PC World in San Francisco. He is on the board of directors of the Audit Bureau of Circulation, Guideposts, and of Trout Unlimited. Griffin is also chairman of Magazine Publishers of America, the trade association for the consumer magazine industry.
MARTHA NELSON was named editor for Time Inc.’s Style & Entertainment Group in October, 2008, overseeing six of Time Inc.’s leading magazine brands and their websites, including PEOPLE, InStyle, Entertainment Weekly, Essence, People en Español and PEOPLE StyleWatch. She was previously a group editor for Time Inc., editor of the PEOPLE Group, and the founding editor of InStyle. Nelson was named “Editor of the Year” by Adweek in March, 2006, and Forbes magazine featured her as one of the “World’s Most Powerful Women” in 2004, 2005 & 2006. PEOPLE was nominated for a 2008 National Magazine Award for “General Excellence” in the over 2 million circulation category.
LORRAINE SHANLEY is a principal of Market Partners International (MPI), a consulting firm she co-founded in 1990 to cater to the rapidly changing needs of the book publishing business. In addition to consulting, Shanley serves as publisher of “Publishing Trends,” a monthly newsletter read by senior publishing professionals in 30 countries around the world. She is also a member and past president of Women’s Media Group, is on the marketing committee for the National Book Foundation and serves on the board of Fourth Story Media, a multi-platform content developer based in New York.
