New York University Paris Sciences Lettres Global Alliance Workshop in the Spatial Humanities
“Exploring the Geographic Information of Literature and Art History” / “Cartographie numérique en littérature et en histoire de l’art”
Paris, 4-8 June 2018
Organizers: Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel (ENS PSL), David Joseph Wrisley (NYU Abu Dhabi)
We are happy to announce the call for participation for a digital humanities workshop “Exploring the Geographic Information of Literature and Art History” (4-8 June 2018) taking place in Paris, France. The workshop is open to faculty and graduate students from all the campuses of New York University as well as members of the PSL Research University.
This interdisciplinary workshop aims to provide students and researchers with access to digital, spatial frames of analysis in literary and art history where the fluidity of borders, mobility of objects, sociology of agents and different forms of geographic specificity are central research questions. The workshop will offer digital humanities training in modeling and visualization of spatial research problems using free, open-source tools. The week’s activities will include introductory workshops on resources for the spatial humanities, modeling geodata and geodatabases, named entity recognition, geocoding and visualization of spatial data. Participants will work with modeling raw data in hands on sessions.
Due to the transnational nature of the workshop, it will take place in both French and English. Some command of academic English and French are essential. It assumes no specific knowledge in the digital humanities, although skills in basic data manipulation will be a plus to the application.
Participation in the workshop will be by application only.
To apply for a spot in the workshop: please send a narrative statement (one page single spaced, exclusive of relevant images), outlining the research project (either in preparation or underway), the scope of your data and the significance of the workshop for your project. Please send your application to both djw12 (at) nyu (dot) edu and beatrice (dot) joyeux-prunel (at) ens (dot) fr. Include contact information, relevant links to work and indicate clearly your position and status within NYU or PSL institutions as well as the city from which you would be traveling to Paris on 3 June 2018. Please indicate your level of academic French and English (reading, speaking, listening) as well as any relevant training in the digital humanities that you may already have. Applications will be evaluated for their merit and relevance to the topic. Seats in the workshop are limited.
Application deadline: 20 April 2018 (for those from NYU requesting funding) 1 May 2018 (for French applicants or unfunded applicants)
The application deadline has ended.
Notification: by 25 April 2018 for funding requests, by 5 May 2018 for others
Funding: A few applicants from NYU (New York, Abu Dhabi or Shanghai) will be funded to travel to the workshop. The extent of that funding will be confirmed upon notification. Funded participants will be expected to attend the whole workshop and to give a short, public presentation of their project.
Note: Participants should plan to bring their own laptop (not tablet).
The workshop has been generously funded by the New York University Paris Sciences Lettres Global Alliance (NYU PSL).
