About the company
Puppetry is a very important part of the culture in the Czech Republic. The Czech puppet filmmaker Jan Svankmajer had a strong influence on Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam , and Czech puppetry was put on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 2016.
Puppets in Prague is a small, family company which teaches international students how to design and construct carved wooden marionettes in the Czech tradition. We have had over 1000 people participate in our workshops in Prague from over 30 countries around the world. We have has also taught workshops at many universities, including NYU Tisch Singapore. Puppets in Prague is led by Mirek Trejtnar, a toy/puppet designer and master carver whose work is exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Our workshop is close to Machova.
Since 2020 we have been teaching workshops online, doing workshops on Zoom to hundreds of students around the world. Our workshops focus on marionette carving, skeleton marionettes, toy theatre stages, automata, etc. Our students include professors of scene design , puppeteers, craftspeople, and designers from over 20 countries around the world.
