DECLASSIFIED GUIDE #8: STUDENT DISCOUNTS

Tip # 312: Thrifting

If you like thrifting, you have to check out Prague Thrift Store! On Fridays, they have a student discount where you can get 50% off clothing and 30% off all other items. You just have to show your student ID and you can receive the discount. They have everything you need, including sweaters, jeans, board games, books, kitchen supplies, and suitcases (for those of you who bought too much while abroad and need to take it home).

There are three locations: New Town, Praha 2 near Machova, and Praha 7 near Osadní. Everything is labeled in English, so no worries if you don’t know much Czech yet! We know thrifting in New York can get very expensive very fast, but prices at Prague Thrift Store seem very reasonable, especially with that student discount. Employees are happy to answer any questions if you have them.

Tip # 205: České Dráhy Trains

One good thing came from accidentally getting stuck in Kolín due to some poorly thought out train booking: the discovery of České Dráhy’s student discount. While there may not have been any Ubers going from Kolín to Kutna Hora like my travel buddy and I thought there would be, we managed a round trip for just 64 Kč, or $2.87. All’s well that ends well.

One of the largest train companies in the Czech Republic, České Dráhy offers a 50% discount on trains within the country with your ISIC card, making it a great option for day trips. For trains going outside of the country, you won’t get a full 50% off, but your ISIC card will still shave a couple of dollars off your fare.

Tip # 174: Las Adelitas

If you’re ever craving Mexican food, head to Las Adelitas and get 15% off your order with your ISIC card. Las Adelitas has four locations around the city, including one right next to Máchova and another steps away from Richtrův Dům. It’s the perfect spot to head to after class or pick up take-out from for a night in.

Tip # 224: Public Transportation

Prague has a very efficient public transportation system of trams, metros, and buses. When you arrive in Prague, NYU gives you a one month pass to get around the city, but you’ll have to purchase your own after that one expires. Luckily, if you get an ISIC card, you can purchase a three month pass for 360 Kč or $16.12 (the non-student pass is approximately $66!). The easiest way is to download the PID Lítačka app on your phone. Edit your profile to include a photo and your ISIC number (located on the top right of the plastic card), and then you can purchase your pass! You can find more details on the AYTK page here.

Tip # 603: FotoŠkoda

While I love film, we all know it can get a little expensive. But fear no more! For those of you taking Photography I here in Prague or for anyone else who has been buying into the trendiness of film photography, FotoŠkoda has got you covered. FotoŠkoda has 4.6 stars on Google and was recommended by the film photography professor. With your ISIC card you can get 10% off all photography services, as well as 3% off all products like film, paper, and cameras.
