  1. I’m so happy you had the opportunity to learn about your family and to see this beautiful villa/palace. I’m reading The Last Palace now and find it fascinating. Thanks for sharing your experience and the beautiful pictures!

  2. wonderful comments

Martha Katz I am reading the PALACE book and also love every minute Though I wish it had some of the excellent photos from this article

  3. My father’s closest boyhood friend was Herbert Petschek. The Petschek family helped my father and his parents find passage to Shanghai on one of the last ships before the Nazi occupation. My dad stayed close with Herb as well as Herb’s brother Agon until my father’s death in 1983. Herb and his wife, Fran, even visited my own family when the two were in town from Argentina about 10 years ago. My sister and her husband will be in Prague next month and were hoping to visit my dad’s childhood home. They likely will also visit the Petschek villa.

    1. I met Egon Petschek when he still lived in Buenos Aires. My father and I were visiting Argentina and we went out to dinner with Egon. My father was good friends with Egon’s brother Rudi Petschek. I think I met their parents years ago in Berkeley, California.

  4. Wonderul article – thank you a lot! I’m currently researching some of the petschek family’s buildings designed by the architects Alfred Breslauer and Paul Salinger like ‘Haus am See’ in Berlin for Dr. Paul Petschek. I’m interessted in the technique of descending windows and I’m not talking about sash windows but complete glass fronts vanishing into the ground. I could use some help finding plans. Do you know if there is a family archiv?
    Greetings,

  5. I am one of Egon Petschek’s only living descendants. (My father, Hans passed before him). I’m trying to discover my lineage as well. I never even knew about the above mentioned book so thank you.

  6. Hello,
I am the daughter of Maurio and Alexandra Sax, formerly of Rye, New York. My parents were friends with Greta Petschek Gellert, who I believe could be your great great aunt? I recall that she lived in a beautiful white house in Rye, which I visited as a child. Back in the 1970’s, my parents would accompany Greta to a grand European horse show every year in NYC. Even though my mother was much younger than Greta, they knew each other well because they both were members of the Rye Woman’s Club. My mother was the president of the club for many years, in which she started the drama section. The women put on a wonderful show every year. You great great aunt was in her late 70s or early 80s and still performed in the shows. She was very funny!!!
My mother passed away a few years ago. I remember her telling me that Greta belonged to a very prominent family in Eastern Europe. I have been curious about my mother’s friends and decided to research online about them. When I found your article online, I was so pleased to hear that you visited your family’s palace. I enjoyed seeing the photos of the inside and can imagine how Julius and Greta enjoyed growing up there before being forced to leave their home for safety in the United States.
I thought I would email to add a little bit of what I knew about your great great aunt, Greta Petschek Gellert. She was so lovely.

    All the best,
