Last month, New York University announced that NYU Prague would be accommodating about 15 Ukrainian undergraduate students who have been affected by the Russian invasion.

The Ukrainian undergraduate students will be residing in the NYU Prague dormitories and attending NYU Prague classes during the 2022-2023 academic year, says NYU Prague’s Associate Director Thea Favaloro. Interested Ukrainian students can apply here.

“Geographically, NYU Prague is the closest NYU site to Ukraine,” explains Favaloro. “As Czech, Ukrainian and Russian are all Slavic languages, the local culture and language should feel more familiar to Ukrainians than perhaps would be the case in other countries where there are NYU sites.”

According to a statement by Josh Taylor, NYU’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Programs and Mobility Services, NYU will cover all costs, including housing, health insurance, and tuition. NYU will also provide the Ukrainian undergraduate students with a living stipend, says Taylor.

To achieve this initiative, NYU is partnering with Ukrainian Global University, a non-profit connecting Ukrainian scholars displaced by the war with educational institutions that will sponsor their studies.

“The UGU…have been helping to get the word out about our program, identifying appropriate candidates for us, and helping us think through what, if any, additional courses would be helpful to offer,” says Favaloro.

According to a UGU press release, UGU hopes this program will provide Ukrainian students continuity with their studies and inspire them to “do research abroad in order to come back and rebuild Ukraine.”

How Current NYU Students Can Help Ukrainian Refugees

If you’d like to donate financially, you can contribute to a fund for military equipment that’s been set up by The Embassy of Ukraine in the Czech Republic here. You can also donate to several different foundations on this platform.
