Study Abroad Standard
The Study Abroad Standard* applies to all students attending NYU Study Abroad programs. It states:
“Students attending New York University Study Abroad are expected to show both within, and without, the University such respect for order, morality, personal honour and the rights of others as is demanded of good citizens. Failure to do this will be sufficient cause for removal from the University and Study Abroad Programs.”
The Study Abroad Standard can be applied to a great variety of situations. Actions which could be in violation of it include:
- Physical Assault or posing danger to others;
- Property damage and attempts to damage University, and public, property;
- Theft, including theft of University and non-University, property such as street signs, furniture;
- Forgery or plagiarism;
- Sexual harassment or other sexual misconduct;
- Misrepresentation in seeking financial aid, University housing, or other University benefits;
- Misuse of University computer equipment or email;
- Behavior under the influence of alcohol or drugs which poses a danger to self, others, or reflects negatively upon the University;
- Sending threatening and obscene messages to another student via email, phone or voice-mail.
Recognizing the global nature and customs of our programs around the world, there is no common penalty which applies to violations of the Study Abroad Standard. Infractions could lead to penalties ranging from formal warning and community service to expulsion. In each case, the nature and seriousness of the offence, the motivation underlying the offence, and precedent in similar cases are considered.

New York University expects students enrolled in the NYU Prague Program to conduct themselves in a manner which is exemplified by the NYU Study Abroad Standard – namely to behave in a manner that demonstrates good intentions, mature judgments and respect for the rights of others. Those who violate the NYU Study Abroad Standard or fail to comply with NYU’s behavioral expectations will undergo the New York University judicial procedure. Criminal acts will be dealt with through the proper authorities.
