Room and Residence Hall Changes
A room change within the same or to a different residence hall is permitted subject to availability. Students who wish to request a reassignment must complete a Housing Change Request Form, available from the Assistant Director for Student Life. Students who have requested a reassignment will be notified as space becomes available. Residents may not change rooms or residence halls without approval of this request and may be subject to disciplinary action if they do so.
Roommate Relations
Good communication is important for a harmonious residence hall living experience. Talk with your roommate(s). Discuss how to arrange the room, how to decorate (and with what), what shared items each person will bring, what plants and other accessories to buy. Set ground rules. Who will water the plants? Who gets first dibs on the bathroom/shower, and on what days? Who can borrow what, when and for how long? When is the best time to study in the room? How do you feel about overnight guests? Make arrangements and keep your word. Discuss pet peeves, personal habits, sleeping schedules, musical tastes, needs, wants and expectations. Honesty, consideration, mutual respect, communication, compromise and understanding are crucial in learning to live with your roommate(s).
General Guidelines for Good Room-mate Relations
- Be willing to accept alternative lifestyles.
- Communicate. Talk with your roommate(s) about things that affect your relationship. Don’t think problems will go away by themselves.
- If overnight guests are approved, plan in advance for their visits and be considerate.
- Keep accurate records of any shared bills.
- Replace broken property; return borrowed items.
- Make an effort to keep your living space clean, comfortable and pleasant.
Conflict Resolution
If problems arise between roommates, in the first instance you should get help from your RA or another member of NYU Prague staff. A process of mediation will be arranged, which is a confidential process in which two or more parties voluntarily meet to reach their own agreement with the assistance of a mediator. The participants are responsible for honoring their agreements. Arbitration is also available to help resolve disputes. Arbitration is a confidential process in which the parties meet before a panel of NYU Prague staff and / or faculty. Professional intervention at which all involved roommates are present might be necessary if a conflict escalates into a situation that is described by either party as abusive (verbally or physically).
If despite all the efforts a student requests a room change, they shall fill out this form and send it to prague.housing@nyu.edu.
