Noise

Noise

All members of the NYU Prague student community should be able to live free from disorderly, disruptive, or aggressive behavior that interferes with the general comfort, safety, security, health or welfare of the residence hall community. Simply put, excessive noise within NYU Prague residence halls will not be tolerated.

In Prague, it is the law to observe “quiet hours” after 10 p.m. and until 6 a.m. This law can be enforced with a legal penalty, a hefty monetary fine, if thepolice are called. You will be held responsible for your actions by local authorities and by NYU Prague. Violations of noise regulations or recurring complaints may warrant expulsion from NYU Prague housing and ultimately the program.

Residents are expected to keep sound to reasonable levels and must comply with requests from staff (RAs, Security staff, NYU Prague staff) to reduce noise levels that are intrusive when asked to do so. Failure to comply with staff requests to reduce noise will result in disciplinary action. Noise violations within the NYU Prague residences are more likely to occur when residents consume alcohol. Students who violate the housing policy while drunk will face severe disciplinary action, as well as mandatory health
assessments. The following section provides more detailed information about NYU Prague’s Residence Hall Drug and Alcohol Policy.

Please also keep noise levels down in the communal areas such as hallways and especially the Study Rooms. Please remember that residences are located in residential areas and some neighboring flats are privately owned by tenants. It is a good idea to regulate noise travel by shutting windows and closing doors if you are gathered in a room and chatting. The use of amplifiers or P.A. systems in the residence halls is prohibited. You can help reduce noise by turning the ‘bass’ down on your stereo as it has a lower frequency. If you are asked to leave a room by an RA or a Security Officer because of excessive noise after 10 p.m., you should comply. If students fail to disperse after 30 minutes, the residents of the flat will be summoned to a disciplinary hearing the next day by NYU Prague administration. It is the responsibility of the residents to control what occurs in their flat and therefore they will be held to account for any NYU Prague policies which are violated within their apartment. Residents and guests are expected to enter residences in a calm and civilized manner. There is to be NO loitering or congregating outside the front of any building after 10 p.m. and any noise after this time must be kept to a minimum. Anyone outside after 10 p.m. must move inside to his or her apartment when asked to do so by the Security Officer.

The Study Lounges are Quiet Areas

The TV room is a common space for socializing, but please be considerate and keep noise to a minimum. You may eat in the TV room, but you must clean up after yourself and shouldn’t leave dirty dishes or personal belongings in the common area.
