By NYU Prague Now!

A Guide to Máchova, the Better NYU Prague Dorm

COMMON SPACES
Máchova study lounge

STUDY LOUNGE (top floor)

The upstairs study lounge is located on the very top floor of the building. It offers a stunning view of the city. You have to walk through apartment 11 and up the stairs.

The study lounge offers a spacious place where you can study in comfy chairs and sofas or work on your group projects. There are also computers connected to the internet.

Study lounge etiquette:

➡️It is a QUIET space meant for studying, working and relaxing, which means that you should minimize loud speaking when somebody else is trying to focus.
➡️ If you need to use the BATHROOM in suite 11, only go to the small/left one. Or run down to your own suite.
➡️ NO LOUD MUSIC is allowed – use your headphones.
➡️ Use your suite kitchens or the TV room for gatherings and talking with your friends.
➡️ Respect the PRIVACY of the residents of suite 11 when walking up to/coming down from the SL. DO NOT STOMP on the wooden stairs!
➡️ NO FOOD is allowed in the SL.
➡️The trash goes in the trash can in the SL (not the suite 11 trash cans).
➡️ And remember the QUIET HOURS 10pm-6am (applies to all of Machova/Prague/Czech Republic….)!

Laundry room equipped with 4 washing machines and 4 dryers can be found in the basement.

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure not to overload the washing machines, they won’t start washing or won’t wash your clothes properly if you do.
  • Always set a timer in order for you to pick up your clothes right after the cycle finishes.
  • DO NOT PUT SOAKING WET CLOTHES IN THE DRYER! Run a spin cycle first, it takes approx. 10 minutes.
  • If you can’t open the washing machine door, get an RA to help, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE WASHING MACHINE BY USING FORCE!
  • Dryer didn’t dry your clothes properly? Check the lint filter and clean it, then run another cycle or hang your clothes on a drying rack – you can find them in every suite. Check out our laundry guide for more details on how to do your laundry.

TRASH & RECYCLING
recycling icon

TRASH

Trash from the bins in your kitchen and bathroom is taken out three times a week by the cleaning service. Please make sure to only throw in trash that cannot be recycled. You are responsible for taking out the trash from your room. You can place tied up trash bags on the rubber mat in the basement across the corridor from the elevator. You can find extra trash bags in the kitchen.

RECYCLING

There are three main materials that can be recycled: plastic, paper and glass. You can find plastic bins for recycling in your kitchens. You are responsible for taking out the recycling, please make sure to do it regularly.

  • make sure to step on plastic bottles and boxes to flatten them before throwing them out
  • toilet rolls, milk and egg cartons do not belong into recycling bins
  • always rinse plastic or glass packaging before throwing it into the recycling bins

You can check what falls within the three recycling categories in our recycling guide. All other items belong to the general waste bins.

The recycling bins are around the corner from Máchova: Go downhill from Máchova, take the first left, walk through the tree alley and you will see the bins on the corner of the street.

Common spaces

The common spaces in the dorm are cleaned three times a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The cleaning service cleans the surfaces and floor in kitchens, bathrooms and the floors in hallways and take out trash from the common spaces. They do not clean your room, wash the dishes or take out the recycling.

Your room

Make sure to clean your room regularly, there are cleaning supplies available in every kitchen and you can borrow a vacuum cleaner from the guard downstairs.  For hygienic reasons, you should also wash your sheets at least once every two weeks. You can get a clean set of sheets from the guard in exchange for the used one once per semester.

HOUSING POLICIES
policy icon

Quiet hours

In Prague, it is the law to observe “quiet hours” after 10 p.m. and until 6 a.m. This law can be enforced with a legal penalty, a hefty monetary fine, or confiscation of audio-visual equipment if the police are called. You will be held responsible for your actions by local authorities and by NYU Prague. Violations of noise regulations or recurring complaints may warrant expulsion from NYU Prague housing and ultimately the program.

Residents are expected to keep sound to reasonable levels and must comply with requests from staff (RAs, Security staff, NYU Prague staff) to reduce noise levels that are intrusive when asked to do so. Failure to comply with staff requests to reduce noise will result in disciplinary action. Noise violations within the NYU Prague residences are more likely to occur when residents consume alcohol. Students who violate the housing policy while drunk will face severe disciplinary action, as well as mandatory health assessments.

Smoking

There is absolutely no smoking in the NYU Prague Residences. If you wish to smoke, you must do so outside the building (excluding the backyard). Smoking devices, including but not limited to pipes, bongs, and hookahs, are not permitted in the residence halls.

Drug and Alcohol Policy

Alcohol

Drinking or possessing alcohol is prohibited in NYU Prague housing.

Drugs

The unlawful possession, use, or distribution of drugs will not be tolerated on University premises. Upon finding evidence of the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of drugs on its premises by any student, the University will take appropriate action, including, but not limited to, probation, suspension or expulsion. In addition, students who violate this policy may be subject to criminal prosecution under Czech laws that specify fines or imprisonment for conviction of drug-related offenses.

Marijuana

Marijuana is an illegal substance and is prohibited in the residence halls. Any student who is found to be in possession of or using marijuana will face severe disciplinary action and possible criminal charges. Water pipes, bongs, hookahs and other paraphernalia commonly associated with drug use also are prohibited in the residence halls.

Other Controlled Substances

The possession or use of narcotics and/or other controlled substances without a valid prescription in the residence halls is prohibited. Students are expected to obey local Czech laws regarding the use, sale and distribution of controlled substances.

More information about Housing Policies and General Conduct Policies is available in the Student Life Policies section.
