Jenůfa – one of the greatest operas of the 20th century by one of Europe’s most original and unique composers – Leoš Janáček. A heart-breaking tragedy set in rural 19th-century Moravia. The music develops local folklore motives but is strikingly modern at the same time. The composer depicts human relationships formed by the harsh milieu of a self-contained rural community, with its inhabitants’ lives being exposed to the constant gaze of others. This conservative environment affects the fate of the young Jenůfa, and her stepmother Kostelnička, who at any cost strives to retain her reputation as a virtuous, moral woman. Paradoxically, she does so by secretly murdering Jenůfa’s extramarital child.
Venue: The National Theater – an unequivocal symbol of Czech national self-determination in the 19th century, one of the cornerstones of Czech art and architecture. The view from its terrace will take your breath away.
