Troubleshooting
- Make sure not to overload the washing machines, they won’t start washing or won’t wash your clothes properly if you do.
- DO NOT PUT SOAKING WET CLOTHES IN THE DRYER! Run a spin cycle first, it takes approx. 10 minutes.
- If you can’t open the washing machine door, get an RA to help, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE WASHING MACHINE BY USING FORCE!
- Dryer didn’t dry your clothes properly? Check the lint filter and clean it, then run another cycle or hang your clothes on a drying rack – you can find them in every suite. Check out our laundry guide for more details on how to do your laundry.
TRASH & RECYCLING
TRASH
Trash from the bins in your kitchen is taken out three times a week by the cleaning service. Please make sure to only throw in trash that cannot be recycled. Put trash that can be recycled into the white containers in your kitchens. You may separate plastic, paper and glass. Recycling bins are taken out by the cleaning personel once a week.
RECYCLING
There are three main materials that can be recycled: plastic, paper and glass. You can find plastic bins for recycling in your kitchens.
- make sure to step on plastic bottles and boxes to flatten them before throwing them out
- toilet rolls, milk and egg cartons do not belong into recycling bins
- always rinse plastic or glass packaging before throwing it into the recycling bins
You can check what falls within the three recycling categories in our recycling guide. All other items belong to the general waste bins.
The recycling bins are in the courtyard – ask the guard for keys.

The host is responsible for the actions of their guests at all times. The guest must not infringe on the comfort or rights of the other residents and must maintain an appropriate level of safety and security in the residence hall or apartments. If you do not adhere to these guest policies, you risk losing all guest privileges. Also, the Building Manager and/or the Resident Assistant (RA) can expel a guest who is not registered or who is behaving inappropriately at any time of day or night. NYU Prague students are responsible for their guests following these regulations.
HOUSING POLICIES
Quiet hours
In Prague, it is the law to observe “quiet hours” after 10 p.m. and until 6 a.m. This law can be enforced with a legal penalty, a hefty monetary fine, or confiscation of audio-visual equipment if the police are called. You will be held responsible for your actions by local authorities and by NYU Prague. Violations of noise regulations or recurring complaints may warrant expulsion from NYU Prague housing and ultimately the program.
Residents are expected to keep sound to reasonable levels and must comply with requests from staff (RAs, Security staff, NYU Prague staff) to reduce noise levels that are intrusive when asked to do so. Failure to comply with staff requests to reduce noise will result in disciplinary action. Noise violations within the NYU Prague residences are more likely to occur when residents consume alcohol. Students who violate the housing policy while drunk will face severe disciplinary action, as well as mandatory health assessments.
Smoking
There is absolutely no smoking in the NYU Prague Residences. If you wish to smoke, you must do so outside the building. Smoking devices, including but not limited to pipes, bongs, and hookahs, are not permitted in the residence halls.
Drug and Alcohol Policy
Alcohol
Drinking alcohol is prohibited in NYU housing.
Drugs
The unlawful possession, use, or distribution of drugs will not be tolerated on University premises. Upon finding evidence of the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of drugs on its premises by any student, the University will take appropriate action, including, but not limited to, probation, suspension or expulsion. In addition, students who violate this policy may be subject to criminal prosecution under Czech laws that specify fines or imprisonment for conviction of drug-related offenses.
Marijuana
Marijuana is an illegal substance and is prohibited in the residence halls. Any student who is found to be in possession of or using marijuana will face severe disciplinary action and possible criminal charges. Water pipes, bongs, hookahs and other paraphernalia commonly associated with drug use also are prohibited in the residence halls.
Other Controlled Substances
The possession or use of narcotics and/or other controlled substances without a valid prescription in the residence halls is prohibited. Students are expected to obey local Czech laws regarding the use, sale and distribution of controlled substances.
For more information about Housing Policies and General Conduct Policies, please consult the Student Handbook
