Karlštejn Castle and Srbsko Hike

Friday, April 26th, 10:00am6:00pm. 600 CZK.

Karlštejn castle sits atop a hill in the Český kras (Bohemian karst) nature preserve overlooking the Berounka river. It has lived through many important periods in Czech history, including the golden age of Charles IV and the Hussite wars, before being reconstructed in the 19th century. Following a tour of this impressive medieval castle we will hike through a Bohemian forest and experience some of the Czech cultural appreciation of the outdoors.

The cost of the trip includes transportation to and from Karlštejn, a guided tour of the castle, and ECES staff support.

 Pilsen Liberation Festival

Saturday, May 4th, 9:15am7:30pm. 500 CZK.

Pilsen and some of western Bohemia were the only parts of Czechoslovakia to have been liberated by the US army at the end of WWII, and Pilsen travels back in time every May to celebrate the liberation with a military festival. Although the program has historically focused on the visits of surviving veterans of the liberation, as time passes and fewer veterans are able to visit, the city of Pilsen is trying to shift the liberation festival towards a commemoration of crucial moments in history.

The cost of the trip includes transportation to and from Pilsen and onsite guiding and support from ECES staff.

Prague Peace Trail: Non Violent Resistance in Prague

Thursday, April 18th, 3:00pm-6:00pm. Free.

The Prague Trail for Peace and Non-Violent Resistance (www.praguepeacetrail.org) runs through places connected to the lives of people who, without violence, have defended life and human rights against dehumanizing evil, fear and indifference. ECES professor Ondřej Skovajsa, the creator of the Prague Peace Trail, will guide you along a section of the trail by walking and using some public transportation. He will be able to explain to you the significance of all people mentioned in the context of Czech history and politics. This tour will include portions of the Prague neighborhoods Zizkov, Vinohrady, Nove Mesto, and Letna, which are some of the most popular neighborhoods for students, each with their own unique culture. You will also have a chance to learn about these neighborhoods in Prague to discover new parts of the city outside of Old Town.
