The tradition of the International Roma Day dates back to 1971 when the International Romani Union was founded. The delegates of the union established the current form of the Romani flag and the wording of the International Romani Anthem. An important decision of the congress was also the recognition of the word Roma as the preferred designation of the Roma ethnic group. The day of this important meeting, April 8, was also declared International Roma Day.
