Visiting Czechs at Home

If you made any Czechs friends, odds are that you will be invited to visit them at home. Here are some tips on how to survive your first visit to a Czech home.

Arriving

  • Make sure to arrive on time.
  • Unless it’s a completely informal visit, bring a present for your host – flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine are a safe choice. If bringing flowers, make sure to get an odd number and unwrap them before handing them over to your host.
  • Take your shoes off right after entering the apartment. It is likely that you will get a pair of slippers to wear during your visit.

Lunch or Dinner

  • It is nice to offer to help with dinner preparation, although the hosts will most likely politely refuse.
  • Make sure to wait for everyone to have their food and wish everyone “Dobrou chuť” before you start eating.
  • Don’t forget to compliment the hosts on their culinary skills.
  • You will not be expected to offer help with the dishes after dinner.
  • You will probably be offered a second helping of the main course. If you accept, the host or hostess will be flattered.
