If you made any Czechs friends, odds are that you will be invited to visit them at home. Here are some tips on how to survive your first visit to a Czech home.
Arriving
- Make sure to arrive on time.
- Unless it’s a completely informal visit, bring a present for your host – flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine are a safe choice. If bringing flowers, make sure to get an odd number and unwrap them before handing them over to your host.
- Take your shoes off right after entering the apartment. It is likely that you will get a pair of slippers to wear during your visit.
Lunch or Dinner
- It is nice to offer to help with dinner preparation, although the hosts will most likely politely refuse.
- Make sure to wait for everyone to have their food and wish everyone “Dobrou chuť” before you start eating.
- Don’t forget to compliment the hosts on their culinary skills.
- You will not be expected to offer help with the dishes after dinner.
- You will probably be offered a second helping of the main course. If you accept, the host or hostess will be flattered.
