Metro, bus and Cercanías
It is very easy to get around Madrid without a car. Public transportation boasts to be the cleanest, most affordable and most efficient in Europe.
Here are several ways to get around:
1- Metro de Madrid (Subway) Here is a Metro Map to print out and carry around with you.
2- Autobuses (Buses).
3- Cercanías (Commuter Trains) The closest Cercanías stop to campus is Nuevos Ministerios, check out the Renfe Cercanias map to see if there’s a stop near you. Cercanías is also a great way to get out of the city for a Day Trip to El Escorial or Aranjuez.
To use all three of these options of transporation easily we recommend you get an Abono de Transportes (Monthly Metro Pass). The cost of this abono is 20€. How to get it?
Other options for riding public transportation include:
- Viaje Sencillo (Single Ride Ticket) 1.50€
- 10 pass (10 trip ticket) 12.20€

All students are reminded that they must keep their bus or metro passes until they have completed their trip and exited the bus or metro station. Inspectors, in uniform, randomly board the metro and bus to check to make sure that passengers have valid tickets. If you do not have a valid ticket, you can be fined up to 30€.
- If you are using a single ride or 10-trip ticket, you must present it to the inspector when asked.
- If you use the Monthly Metro Pass, you must present the actual pass (in its holder) that has your name and photo on it.
