It’s very important that you buy a Spanish SIM card or cell phone as soon as you arrive in Madrid. Once you have one, please send an email to nyumadrid-studentlife@nyu.edu with your cell phone number.
We need to have a current cell phone number on file in case of an emergency, so if you lose your phone or change your number then please don’t forget to email Alex and Rodrigo in Student Life with your new number!
Here is some useful Cell Phone Vocabulary to help you when purchasing a SIM card or phone. Also check out the anti-theft brochure for helpful tips.
If you plan on buying a Spanish SIM card, make sure that your American phone is unlocked before doing so!

How they work?
- Every 30 days, your phone plan renews automatically. If you use all of your data before the 30 days are over, you can renew your plan earlier. Make sure you have saldo (credit) in your account to be able to do so.
- You can recharge your saldo online by logging into your account. If you are using an American credit or debit card, you need to click “Pago con banca electrónica” in the “Método de pago” section, otherwise it will not work. If you have a Spanish credit or debit card, click on “Pago con tarjeta de crédito”.
- You can also recharge your saldo at any Orange, Vodafone or Movistar store.
Things to keep in mind:
- Spaniards usually communicate through Whatsapp.
- You can use the apps Whatsapp or Viber to make international calls.
- You can still use iMessage while in Spain.
