Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

FAQ’s

1. How long will it take to find housing?

  • Home sharers
    • Typically, it takes about 4 weeks after completing the intake process to secure a match.
    • Since this is a process that may take some time, applying for housing two days before you want to move in may not be best practice.

2. What will be my financial contribution to the household?

  • Graduate Students
    • You are expected to, through the housing agreement, contribute an agreed-upon amount to household expenses for the duration of your match period. This is not rent money, as you are not considered a tenant of the person you are sharing a home with- you are housemates.
    • It depends on the home share, but current NYFSC hosts are asking for $600-$1400/month.

3. What is the service exchange model?

  • Some hosts would like assistance with taking care of pets or light household chores. While it is a case-by-case situation, some financial contributions to the household can be as low as $50/month with a service exchange agreement.

4. Am I eligible?

  • All NYU graduate students are eligible for the program.
  • At least one member of the household has to be 60 years of age or older to be eligible through the New York Foundation of Senior Citizens.

5. Where are the home shares located?

  • All over New York City, including near NYU campuses.

6. What information is needed from me?

  • Graduate Students
    • Photo ID copy
    • Proof of income
    • Either three reference letters or consent to a background check
  • Adults 60+
    • Either three reference letters or consent to a background check
    • Copy of current lease or proof of ownership of their residence
    • Current photo ID
    • Appropriate space to accommodate a guest

7. How do social engagement and housing improvement grants work?

  • Graduate Students
    • For our 2022-2023 cohort, NYU has 5 grants for social engagement and housing improvement to give to the first 5 students we make home share matches with.

    • The social engagement grant is $200 and should be used with your host on shared activities–this could be a meal, a Broadway show, whatever you two would like to do to spend time together throughout your stay.

    • The Welcome Home grant is $300 and can be used towards any needs, such as furniture or decor, to make you have what you need for a comfortable move-in.

    • Once you have a match agreement finalized, you can reach out to the NYU Team and we will get you set up with your grant funds.

  • Adults 60+
    • We are also offering a $500 onboarding bonus for the first 5 hosts we make a student match with.

8. How much of a time commitment is there?

  • Home sharers
    • Again, this depends on your housing agreement. Some have stayed for a semester, the academic year, or longer.
