CORE MA FACULTY AND STAFF

MA Director of Graduate Studies

Karl Appuhn HeadshotKarl Appuhn (appuhn@nyu.edu)

The MA DGS is responsible for all academic dimensions of the Masters in History (MAH) program.  The MA DGS serves as all students’ initial academic advisor, helping to pair them with thesis supervisors by, in most cases, the beginning of the second semester.

Appuhn is a historian of the environment and medicine in Europe from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. He works on the history of resource extraction and depletion, and changing ideas about the relationship between humans and the natural world. His current research is on the relationship between eighteenth-century agrarian reform movements and the professionalization of veterinary medicine in the republic of Venice.

Director of Archives and Public History Program

Ellen Noonan (ellen.noonan@nyu.edu)

The Director of the Archives and Public History Program oversees all aspects of the program’s curriculum, programming, and student advising. All students consult with the Program Director regularly about course selection, internship placements, and capstone project planning. Professor Noonan also teaches the Introduction to Public History, Approaches to Public History, Internship Seminar, and Research in Public History and Archives courses.

Graduate Program Administrator

Gabriella Sokol (gabriella.sokol@nyu.edu)

The day-to-day administration of graduate degree programs is the responsibility of the Graduate Program Administrator. Questions a student may have about rules, deadlines, grant opportunities, or minor bureaucratic problems should be directed to the Program Administrator. If the issue or problem requires faculty advice or approval, the Program Administrator will advise the student to talk either with her or his advisor or the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS). The Program Administrator is also the communications center for the department. Make sure that the Program Administrator has your current mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses. The Program Administrator can also direct students to funding opportunities, job notices, and the like.

Graduate Program Assistant

Fatouma Keita (fatouma.fabindy.f@nyu.edu)

The Program Assistant is responsible for the practical aspects of registration: providing registration materials and the permission codes by which students officially register. The Program Assistant helps maintain student records and information for the Graduate Program Office, including rosters, listservs, and keeping the website up to date.
