The History of Housing Activism in the Lower East Side poster emerged from a conversation with the GOLES Director, Damaris Reyes. GOLES is a neighborhood housing and preservation organization that has served the Lower East Side of Manhattan since 1977 and are dedicated to tenants’ rights, homelessness prevention, economic development, and community revitalization. They are asked to conduct tours of the Lower East Side in relation to housing activism and preservation. The Lower East Side in New York City has long been a hub for activism. Research and documentation of the history of housing activism in the Lower East Side was conducted by graduate students in Fall of 2016 as a part of a class taught by Dipti Desai. The students did archival research for this project.
