In spring of 2012, the first comprehensive exhibition documenting the work of the influential AIDS activist collective Gran Fury, called “Grand Fury: Read My Lips” at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery. An important component of this exhibition was educational. Gran Fury’s work raised public awareness of AIDS, put pressure on politicians, and opened up a broader spectrum of understanding about the political and collective art practices that flourished in downtown New York during the 1980s and 1990s. A few members of Gran Fury worked with a select group of 10 NYU students from the MFA studio art and graduate art education programs from the Department of Art and Art Professions and from College of Arts and Sciences to think about the contemporary relationship of art and politics. This art activist workshop was designed to produce collective, activist oriented art works that addressed contemporary social issues.
