Class Project Fall 2023
During Week 9 of the semester, we focused on the question: How have social movements contributed to our understanding of artistic activism? After a discussion on the readings and art interventions, students were asked to design a DIY poster on the following prompt:
Thinking of art as organizing, what would it mean to liberate an institution from the structures of oppression built into it from the beginning?
Think about how structures of oppression are maintained. How are we complicit? What are we willing to give up in the context of struggle? How can we use the arts to liberate the institution from maintaining and perpetuating these structures? Select either an art Institution (Museum/Gallery) or an Educational Institution (K-12 Schools or Universities such as NYU)
Based on the readings, use text and images to provide a blueprint for using the arts to liberate the institution from structures of oppression.
