The map The Global Hindutva, 2022 is a power map that visually presents the global infrastructure of right-wing Hindutva groups. The project presents the complex web of the global interaction of the Hindutva ideology; through a power map. The map is intended to be used as an educational tool to expose the Hindutva fascist ideology, and the socio-economic basis of right-wing institutions, towards the assertion of secularism and democracy.
The project draws upon the abundant data and information available on these different organizations and their international links. It uses the visual form to specifically make visible the links between the different groups and organizations. It presents the macro context and fabric of right-wing politics, in particular that of the Hindutva fundamentalist groups, to understand the global structure behind the crisis. This exposure is highly relevant for audiences and communities to understand the scale and level of influence that these networks have, and therefore deepen the analysis about political influences worldwide.
Engaging with maps as a visual art form, involves exploring the aesthetics of time and space, as well as visual strategies for making the visible linkage of different aspects. Maps are an important educational tool as they enhance dialogues and pedagogies. The map here is both an artistic and educational tool, as it creates a visual statement and codifies information. It seeks to reframe geographical maps as a representation of power structures to generate discussion and disseminate information.
The objective of this project is to create an educational tool that can be shared with other artists, educators and scholars to foster critical dialogues and discussions, and build a collective pedagogy of socially engaged artistic practice.
