Hans Haacke Exhibition tour at New Museum, 2019

NYU Art + Education alumni Peter Tresnan led a tour of the Hans Haacke: All Connected exhibition at the New Museum for Art + Ed alumni and current students. 

“For six decades, Haacke has been a pioneer in kinetic art, environmental art, Conceptual art, and institutional critique. This retrospective brings together more than thirty works from across the artist’s career, focusing in particular on the way he expanded the parameters of his practice to encompass the social, political, and economic structures in which art is produced, circulated, and displayed.”

This fun and community-centered event was an opportunity for alumni and current students to meet, look at art together, and engage in conversation.

Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida

During one of their first classes of the semester, students from Critical Pedagogy, Artists, and the Public Sphere took a class took to the Loisaida Center to see the exhibition Activist Estates: a Radical History of Property in Loisaida.

“Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida is an exploration of buildings and properties in the Lower East Side that are celebrated sites of resistance. This exhibition curated and designed by the Architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with Loisaida Center visualizes the narratives of a historic space-based activism via drawings, maps, models, photographs, manuals and posters.”

“An examination of participatory practices in New York City reveals the critical relationship between real estate, architecture and activism. In cities across the country, in the 1970’s, the devaluation of property created a vacuum of ownership. Vacant lots, storefronts, schoolhouses, factories and abandoned tenements in New York City became havens for experimental, communal practices. Amid current debates about urban justice and access to the city, Activist Estates critically re-evaluates the place of counter-institutional practices that shape the landscape of New York City.” –loisaida.org

Programmed: Rules, Codes and Choreographies in Art, 1965-2018 establishes connections between works of art based on instructions, spanning over fifty years of conceptual, video, and computational art. The pieces in the exhibition are all “programmed” using instructions, sets of rules, and code, but they also address the use of programming in their creation. The exhibition links two strands of artistic exploration: the first examines the program as instructions, rules, and algorithms with a focus on conceptual art practices and their emphasis on ideas as the driving force behind the art; the second strand engages with the use of instructions and algorithms to manipulate the TV program, its apparatus, and signals or image sequences. Featuring works drawn from the Whitney’s collection, Programmed looks back at predecessors of computational art and shows how the ideas addressed in those earlier works have evolved in contemporary artistic practices. At a time when our world is increasingly driven by automated systems, Programmed traces how rules and instructions in art have both responded to and been shaped by technologies, resulting in profound changes to our image culture.

Conditions for Learning, Summer 2018

Taking inspiration from the ways that institutional chairs relegate the body to particular poses and postures for learning, the Final Projects exhibition this year focused on several interrelated themes focused on the motivations, choices, and socialized expectations for learners and teachers alike. In determining the title for this year’s exhibition, students took their cues from the physical design and function of educational architecture—specifically classroom chairs—and the ways that bodies are literally and physically constrained to perform in particular ways in schools and classrooms.

In each project, students explored the ways that leaners (and facilitators) could move beyond the constraints of specific learning experiences and environments, whether exploring the possibilities of teaching for artistic behavior (TAB), critiquing the philosophy and protocols of a no excuses charter school environment, creating a socially engaged makerspace, better understanding why high school students attend school and feel motivated to learn every day, or comparing notions of success in two different global education contexts.

Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon investigates gender’s place in contemporary art and culture at a moment of political upheaval and renewed culture wars. The exhibition features an intergenerational group of artists who explore gender beyond the binary to usher in more fluid and inclusive expressions of identity.

Impossible House, Summer 2017

Impossible House derives its title from one of the works within it, a participatory installation that invites the audience to reflect on systemic privilege and social structures that can empower and oppress, specifically in relation to education and teaching. Driven by the students’ immediate concerns and investigations around their own education and their place as artists and educators going forward, a considerable amount of work in the exhibition grapples questions of privilege and equity, voice and representation. The individual pieces are propelled by an awareness of each student’s place within society and the education system, as well as the desire to examine or reflect upon ways to transcend the bureaucracies and challenges involved in navigating these systems.

Using academic and social research methodologies inspired by the work of contemporary artists, students investigated individual questions through collaborative gestures with students, conversations with family and friends, the creation of participatory makerspaces, generating collections and accumulations of objects and texts, and a variety of other modes of visual storytelling. Embedded in each work is an awareness of the contradictions within the politics of representation and the responsibilities of speaking for and with others.

Ultimately each work represents the desire for art to be transformative—transforming the artist as they explore unfamiliar perspectives and investigate new ways of thinking and making, impacting the viewer as they navigate unconventional art and research practices, and perhaps even shifting the larger social landscape to challenge and inspire our work as artists, educators, and citizens.

Freedoms Exhibition, 2016

Saturday Art Workshop is an 8-week program that combines the excitement of creating art with issues in social justice. Saturday mornings, from 10am-12pm, teens research significant social themes and discover a rich array of innovative, multidisciplinary approaches through which they can visually express their ideas. The themes for this year’s Workshop were “Vote This,” “Gender Lines,” “#NoJusticeNoPeace” and “(un)Plugged.”

Classes are taught by teams of graduate students completing their Certification in Art Education program at New York University. Together, students and teachers consider ways in which artists influence society, and experiment with techniques that include drawing, painting, printmaking, video, photography, 3-dimensional media, and installation. These workshops challenge students to think outside of traditional artistic media and explore how artistic boundaries and influence can be stretched to include what has historically been excluded.

The program culminates in a final exhibition inviting a wide audience of parents, friends, teachers, and NYU faculty, to see the resulting student work.

Spring 2016 Exhibition: Praxis

Praxis describes the reciprocity between reflection and action; a space of possibility and of risk; A space where we learn by doing and act by thinking. The exhibition, Praxis represents the work of 9 artist educators who have each posed a question about the realities and complexities of contemporary education. Each seeks answers through engaging with a diverse range of methodologies including reading theory, crafting surveys, conducting interviews, pursuing conversations, and paying close attention how we learn and communicate, in both formal and informal learning environments.

Research/Final Projects Spring 2016

The artist Lize Mogel visited the Research/Final Projects class this Spring to share her work as a radical cartographer. Lize shared different mapping projects which she has completed with the class, as well as facilitated a mapping exercise examining the invisible infrastructures of the university. As the students explore a range of methods with which artists engage in research as part of their artistic process, towards generating their own artistic research for their final exhibition in the NYU Commons Gallery May 22-June 5th, 2016, this experience has been crucial to their developing practice.

This course involves theme / idea driven art making, through an exploration of the reproducible mediums of photography, printmaking, video and sound. The focus is on the development of a research driven, interdisciplinary, contemporary art practice, that responds to specific societal, environmental or political themes that have a personal resonance. The dialogic aspect of this art practice lies in that it is consistently informed by research, and in turn, informs the research that feeds it.
