Special Education: Disability Studies and Contemporary Art is a course that addresses special education in American schools through the lens of the arts, looking at term ‘disabled’ when working with students with different abilities. Focusing on 14 recognized classifications, students discuss how collaboration with general ed teachers informs practice and deepens student experience, using the Individual Education Plans to scaffold instruction. Students discuss partnering with family and community to create a welcoming classroom environment, and examine how disability is represented in visual culture through media and contemporary art.
