What is worth knowing? How can education serve as a catalyst for artistic practice? What are the possibilities for social transformation through a critical pedagogy?
This course introduces critical pedagogy in relation to progressive educational theory, contemporary social practice and public art, and public pedagogy in the context of the United States. Based on readings in education and cultural theory, we examine teaching and learning as creative acts and as a means for social transformation in formal and informal settings. Connecting theory to practice, students analyze their own educational experiences, read narratives and case studies artists and educators, and participate in fieldwork experiences in partnership with local organizations.
