Considering the greater socio-political context in which we all exist, what is meaningful learning through the visual arts in elementary and secondary schools?
A Multi-Pronged Approach to Teaching and Learning
In these courses we discuss the notion of teaching art in the elementary and secondary school as “situated practice.” All teaching is situated, in that it takes place in a particular institution (school, museum, community center, religious organization, etc), in a specific historical moment, and within a particular society.
Throughout the course we will seek to engage with personal bias, in order to access the ways in which we can grow more intentional in our work as artist educators, who are committed to social change through our teaching practice. Students will complete fieldwork in an elementary and secondary school art classroom. In this field placement you will be paired with a cooperating teacher once a week, for a minimum of 50 hours during the semester.
