Meredith McDevitt, Art+Education alumna and elementary art teacher invited us into her classroom to share her work as an anti-racist art educator. Meredith describes her commitments and values as a white educator working in a school with predominantly black and brown students and families while we see her and her students learning about social justice issues including race, identity, and immigration through visual inquiry and studio art materials.
Meredith often joins us in our NYU seminar – Race, Education and the Politics of Representation class – to share her work. her presentation, The Why and How of Teaching About Race in the Elementary Art Classroom shares her experiences with topics such as fostering student art work that is self-reflective and identity-based, racial literacy, the importance of building a sense of community and comfort, and providing historical grounding.
