Virtual Production Week 2: World Building

This week I made a volcano scene from an empty level. I thought of the idea while I was playing with the terrain tool, initially I only wanted to make a cliff by the sea where the Pikachu got struck by llightning, but as soon as that took shape it reminded me of the various islands and volcanoes I saw in Indonesia, and the particle systems work well in this scene too, so I designed the scene this way.

I learned how to paint different textures onto the landscape through making material blueprint. I appreciate the requirement of only using the starter content — I think it is a good opportunity discover what is in it, I never knew there are so many particle systems ready to use! Also, it simplified the work by saving a lot of time fussing over which material or asset to use. I think it is a better work flow to grey box out the basic layout before looking for better textures and assets to make it look even more realistic.
