Project Proposal

Concept

People use internet to communicate all the time. But what is communication on the internet? What can we truly learn about a person through this kind of communication? How do we know we know? How do we truly understand the emotion behind the short sentence a person typed? Did he/she type in rush or took his/her time? What did he/she think of? This project aims to offer a various of possibilities behind a simple sentence, thus reveals the possibilities of very different stories.

Sources

This project was inspired by the work of Brighid Lowe – “Now Here / Nowhere” and Image Atlas by Taryn Simon and Aaron Swartz. In his work Lowe played with the duplicity of text words – take away the space in Now Here, it suddenly becomes Nowhere. Is internet communication what it appears to be, happening right now, right here, or is it really happening nowhere, because we can’t ever know what is happening on the other side? The simple form of his work set the groundwork of how this project is going to be presented to the audience. There is more meaning behind the ever appearing texts in his work, and it reflects the uncertainty behind every internet communication that we want to explore. The Image Atlas is a search engine in which the user puts in words and is shown the picture results in different countries. It challenges the fixed meaning of words, and showed that words can be interpreted differently by different cultures. It is the same with individuals. Everyone’s own life experience shaped the conception of words. In my project I played with both these concepts, and hope to explore more about audience’s creation of the story, and see how everyone fills in the blanks of the story differently.

Production

My project would involve mainly the media of text and audio. It would be coded in html, css and javascipt. The main way of interaction would be clicking and hovering on. The form of interaction would be simple and easy to grasp for the audience, as there be clear signs which elements would be accessible to interaction. It is designed to be a story and provide the audience an immersive experience.
