Our project: imanas.shanghai.nyu.edu/~yl6999/comic/
For the interactive comic, Lorna and I used the story “A Study in Pink” from Sherlock Holmes’ series. We started with the introduction of the crime scene and ended at the capture of the murderer. For this project, Lorna and I split up the work very evenly, and we worked on every page together, so we both know the code of every page very clearly. To ensure that the project would be done in a timely manner, we started by creating a simple version of the current website. We only had pictures and texts and pop-up windows to tell our story. After we established the basis of our template, we began adding the different elements and buttons to make our comic more interactive and engaging.
This is the part where we split up the work. One of us focused more heavily on the title page and end page along with transitions and buttons between pages, and the other worked on the interactive elements, such as the exclamation points on the third page. In the pages before the transition section “Finally back home…” we went for an engaging and mysterious theme. The user of the comic would be looking at the clues along with the characters in the story. Then, we went for a more traditional comic style look for after “Finally back home…” transition to change up the ambiance, as this was the part where Sherlock was nearing the solving of the mystery and they were no longer investigating the subjects at the crime scene. I believe that Lorna and I did a good job of telling the story that we wanted to tell, and we were definitely satisfied with our abilities to create an interactive project with over 76 files combined together; however, if we had more time, we would have definitely experimented more. We knew going in that we could not set ourselves with really high expectations because there was very limited time to work on this, and also because we didn’t yet have a lot of experience with JavaScript, which was the language that would allow us to incorporate a lot of special features. We do see that our project is on the more basic side, in terms of it not having a professional feel to it if someone were to just discover this on the internet. We are happy with how we were able to finish this project because we got to realize how complicated it is to really produce something as simple looking as a button to transition to the next page.
