One of the goals of our work is to obtain a deeper understanding of cross-cultural exchange (referred to in contemporary anthropology and ethnomusicology as “transculturation”) in the region and how it has shaped existing musical styles. Although interesting results are emerging from the computational analysis we are undertaking, we are working to develop new approaches that involve humanistic methodologies. We intend to develop an approach to studying musical transculturation that productively combines ethnographic and computational methods while also being sensitive to the interdependence of music and language.
