Compendium of Music From the Region

We are currently creating a digital music compendium of music from a region constituted by what is often called the Arab mashriq (comprising the present-day countries Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan and western Iraq), the countries of the Arabian Gulf and Peninsula (including eastern Iraq), South India, and the western Indian Ocean (including port cities and regions of eastern Africa). This is being done in collaboration with the Music and Audio Research Lab (MARL) at NYU New York and with the Centre de Recherche en Ethnomusicologie (CREM) in Paris through a Global Seed Fund Grant for project “Creation and Analysis of a Digital Repository of Middle Eastern Music.” This compendium contains commercial recordings as well as unreleased field recordings.
