Tactile Experiences: George Washington Portraits
Touch Objects
In front of you are two tactile interpretations of George Washington. Each piece is 12 inches wide by 14 inches tall and is located on the diagonal shelf below the QR Code.
The left tactile represents a younger George Washington which the right tactile represents an older George Washington. Both images feature Washington at a 3/4 profile view. The tactile consists of Washington’s head, represented using smooth painted cardboard, and his clothing, represented with fabric covered cardboard.
Starting at 12 o’clock, is the top of Washington’s head. At 3 o’clock, you will find levels representing his hair. Between 5 and 6 o’clock, you will find Washington’s chin. Notice how the two areas on each are different. The younger having less level and the older Washington having more. These levels represent the jowls that are depicted in the original painting.

Touch Objects
On the right side of the center panel, there is a life size 2.5D replica of the stove. Notice the ornate details of this cast iron stove replica.
Moving down and to the left, there is a square acrylic case containing a large tea kettle like one that would have been used on this 19th century stove. On the top of the case, the handle of the tea kettle sticks out allowing one to pick up the kettle. On the front of the case in the center, there is hole to allow for one to feel the surface of the cast iron.
Audio
Directly below the tea kettle, located on a slanted top, are three buttons for audio with the speaker on the right. The leftmost button tells the story of the stove from a historian’s perspective. Next, the center button tells the docent’s perspective. Lastly, there is the cook’s perspective from the rightmost button. All three recordings with transcript are available on the exhibit site as well.
