Journal Assignments

For all journal assignments listed below, please use the following guidelines unless otherwise specified:

  • Assignments should be 2-3pp in length.  The format is the usual: double-spaced, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman or a similar font.
  • You must actually GO to Melrose to perform the work in the assignment. These journal assignments are your fieldwork and will not only help you with your final assignments for the course, but with getting a stronger sense of the neighborhood you are studying.
  • Keep track of the addresses, blocks, and regions you are visiting and share them in your write-up.  We may want to use those addresses later!
  • Write down any questions you develop that you may want to ask me, your classmates, or our collaborators at WHEDco.
  • Feel free to take photos and share them with the class, but please do not take photographs of people without their permission, or see the Bronx only through the lens of a camera.  This is not about overly aestheticizing, so much as documenting, where you are. You can also tag your photos if you are using Instagram: #displacedhistories and #nyumelrose
  • Use the map linked here to familiarize yourself with what the “official” boundaries of Melrose are.  However, WHEDco has identified the following boundaries as the area they would like us to study most fully: E. 161st St. north to Crotona Park South, between Park Ave. and Prospect Ave. to the east
