Course Grades

Your course grade will be weighted and calculated from the higher one of the following for each student:

  Formula 1 Formula 2
Midterms 12.5%  Exam 1 7.5% – The lower Midterm
Midterms 12.5% Exam 2 12.5% – The higher Midterm

  • 90%  – 92.99%: A-
  • 87% – 89.99%:  B+
  • 83% – 86.99%:  B
  • 80% – 82.99%:  B-
  • 75%  – 79.99%: C+
  • 65% – 74.99%:  C
  • 50% – 64.99%:  D

Exams

During the semester there will be two midterm exams in class and one comprehensive final exam.

  • The dates for the midterm exams are listed on the course schedule.
  • Our final exam is during undergraduate final exam week Dec. 15 – Dec. 21, 2020. Please check albert.nyu.edu for your final week schedule and plan your travel accordingly.

All exams will be monitored over zoom or by smart proctoring tool, make sure you can connect to Internet and have a camera to show your face during the exam.

Exams will contain a mixture of computational and conceptual problems. Some of them will resemble homework problems, while some will be brand new to you. The final exam is likely to be a mixture of multiple choice and free response problems.

Out-of-sequence exams:

An excused absence for an exam requires notification to the instructor BEFORE the exam starts, followed by valid documentation. Otherwise, you will receive a “0” for any missed exams.

We may approve out-of-sequence exams in the following cases:

  1. A documented medical excuse.
  2. A University sponsored event such as an athletic tournament, a play, or a musical performance. Athletic practices and rehearsals do not fall into this category. Please have your coach, conductor, or other faculty advisor contact your instructor.
  3. A religious holiday.
  4. Extreme hardship such as a family emergency.

Makeups must occur within one week of the regularly scheduled exam or quiz, otherwise a zero score will be given.

Note: We will not be able to accommodate out-of-sequence exams for purposes of more convenient travel, including already purchased tickets.

Participation

Both in – class and out – of – class participation will construct 10% of the course grade.

Depends on the instructor, participation will come from Clicker Questions/polling / call your name to answer question/ breakout room discussion/class forum/ virtual office hour visit.

Weekly Quizzes and HW

Planned travel, planned routine visit to doctors, planned events or extracurricular activities CANNOT
serve as excuse for late HW.  Because sometimes things more important than math homework come up, you have the “dropping lowest quiz and HW scores” as free spin.
