Design Discussion Week 5

On James Dyson

Technical improvement is the core of Dyson’s innovation process. His excellent use of new technology to improve existing products in the market makes his brand stand out among its competitors. Additionally, his impeccable attention to detail allows him to design products with features that address common user problems and ultimately make his customers’ lives much more convenient. An example of this is Dyson’s laser-equipped vacuum that makes minuscule dust particles visible to the naked eye. An aspect of his design process that stood out to me was his positive outlook on the trial-and-error process. As mentioned in the interview, he created 5,126 prototypes for the vacuum. In this process, every setback and improvement he had to implement was perceived as a positive learning experience which I think is an essential demeanor to maintain in effectively designing products.

A Dyson product that I like is the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer which allows its users to dry and style their hair with minimal heat damage.

Karim Rasheed’s Innovative Designs

Karim Rasheed’s designs are easily distinguishable due to their bold and colorful nature. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, his designs are also functional yet progressive given his use of recycled materials (plastic, wood, etc.) in some of his collections. An example of this is his Oceana Collection which is a living room set that was created with recycled plastic.
