Before, I thought performance was more for entertainment and more for mainstream culture. Aftre reading this article,I realize that it’s more about resistance as well as expressing what people really want to say.In China, the closest thing to this kind of performance I have seen is talk show and rap.But both forms of performance are now becoming popular because of TV shows.Niche performances that focus on personal expression are reaching mass audiences and are accepted by mainstream culture.I am puzzled about their boundaries with mainstream culture.
One thing that caught my attention in particular was about the artistic growth experience of African American women.Chinese female artists have the same situation.Formative school years help them to form traditional Chinese woman’s mild characters.And when they want to fight, the only theme only remains sexism.
As for the relationship between music and politics, I think that when we were in elementary and middle schools, there were chorus competitions between classes every year.The songs sung are all revolutionary songs sung by the army during the war.It may make teenagers form a common mind.
