Welcome! My name is Madeline (Maddie) Gilbert and I am a third-year PhD student in the Department of Linguistics at NYU. My primary interests lie in phonetics and phonology, and their intersections with sociolinguistic variation and change. My first qualifying paper focused on the interaction between stress and morphological complexity in Brazilian Portuguese. My second qualifying paper focuses on sociophonetic variation in Spanish in contact with Portuguese on the Uruguay-Brazil border.
Prior to NYU, I received my BA in Spanish from Middlebury College, where I also studied Linguistics and Italian. My senior thesis investigated the sociolinguistic variation of rhotics in Buenos Aires Spanish.
If you have questions, comments, or similar interests, I’d love to hear from you!
